
Meagan Mahlberg is excited to return to her native land of Colorado after a year of living in Manhattan. There, she focused on intensive studies with vocal teacher Patricia McCaffrey and also made her NYC debut with the role of Suor Angelica in Pucinni’s Suor Angelica with Opera Oggi New York. Since returning last winter, she has performed the role of Vanessa in Samuel Barber's Vanessa with Boulder Opera Company, Hetty in the world premier of Leanna Kirchoff’s opera The Clever Artifice of Harriet and Margaret, as well as the role of Grace in the award winning new musical Waiting by Michael O’Dell. Mahlberg has returned to the University of Colorado at Boulder for the Professional Performance Certificate program, in which her credits for this season include Mabel in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, Fiordiligi in Così fan Tutti, and Poppea in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea.
Meagan has studied and performed roles including Countess and Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro, Susannah in Susannah, Violetta in La Traviata, Elvira in Don Giovanni and Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute (which she also performed for a benefit concert with the Boulder Youth Symphony), Elektra in Idomeneo, Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos, Bianca in The Rape of Lucretia and Bergere, Shepardess, and Frog in L'enfant et les sortileges. Meagan has also participated in numerous opera choruses including The Magic Flute, Hansel and Gretel, Le nozze di Figaro, L’enfant et les sortileges, The Rape of Lucretia, and Così fan tutte. She earned her Master's degree in voice performance at the University of Colorado, Boulder in December 2011. She graduated with her Bachelor's degree in voice performance from University of Colorado, Boulder in 2008
Meagan has studied abroad in Austria twice. In 2007, she attended AIMS in Graz and in 2009 she was fully funded by scholarships from Allied Arts and Mu Phi Epsilon to attend LIED AUSTRIA. In the summer of 2011, she spent five weeks singing Verdi and Rossini repertoire in concerts in northeast Italy with the Piccolo Festival.
Meagan is currently studying with Jennifer Bird-Arvidsson. Prior to her time in NYC, she studied with mezzo-soprano Julie Simson for eight years. She has also worked with Charmaine Coppom and Patti Peterson. In addition, she studied briefly with Bonaldo Giaiotti while in Italy. Meagan coaches with Nicholas Carthy, Robert Spillman, Christopher Zemliauskas and Mutsumi Moteki. Meagan has sung in various master classes including a Mu Phi Epsilon-sponsored master class with Christine Brewer, and most recently she has sung in multiple master classes with Alessandro Corbelli.
In 2011, Meagan took second place in the Denver Lyric Opera Guild voice competition and successfully completed two rounds of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. In 2007, Meagan won the Anderson Voice Scholarship Competition at University of Colorado, Boulder and was a finalist in 2006 and 2005. She has received multiple scholarships for school including full tuition scholarships all four years of undergraduate study, as well as full tuition plus stipend scholarship for graduate study. Meagan has received multiple high marks in NATS competitions, and solo/ensemble competitions.
In addition to a strong focus on classical repertoire, Meagan has premiered numerous modern pieces including one written for her by friend and composer Ryan Spencer. “This Quiet” was written in 2007 and premiered at the renowned CU Pendulum Concert Series during the same year.
Meagan is very involved in her music fraternity Mu Phi Epsilon. She is the current president of the Delta Rho Chapter and has been responsible for planning many large events for the fraternity on both a local and regional level.
Although now focusing her energy on singing classically, Meagan has been active in several other genres. Before switching to voice studies, she was an accomplished violinist, and has also written many folk-style songs for voice and guitar, which she performed often during high school and early college. During middle and high school, she played many instruments and was the Drum Major of the marching band. Meagan was also involved in local theater companies, performed numerous plays and musicals, and taught dance choreography and voice lessons at the Broadway Musical Camp in Pueblo, Colorado for two summers.
